[edit] Biographical Information
George Selkirk succeeded Babe Ruth as the New York Yankees rightfielder after the Bambino was sent to the Boston Braves following the 1934 season. In 1942, he joined the Navy and served during World War II. After his playing days ended, he was a minor league manager and later worked in the Kansas City Athletics front office. Selkirk was General Manager of the expansion Washington Senators from 1963 to 1968.
Selkirk was a part of the Yankee teams that always seemed to be winning World Series in the 1930's (he played on Series winners in 1936-39 and 1941), and had his best year in 1937 when he hit 18 home runs in 78 games - with a slugging average that was almost as high as Lou Gehrig's.
